Dr. Ir. J.A. Keuning (Lex) developed a profound expertise in ship hydromechanics during his time as an associate professor and head of the towing tank facility. By challenging conventional thinking and exploring ideas beyond established practice, he created innovative solutions for the maritime sector. His most renowned contribution is the “Axe Bow,” a breakthrough design that dramatically improved the seakeeping performance of high-speed vessels.
Lex’s creative and independent mindset inspired generations of students. His broad, forward-looking perspective helped shape them into more versatile and accomplished maritime engineers.
The Axe Bow was not only a major success for the Dutch maritime industry.
